NICS FRERES

(MICHEL and JULES)

The Nics brothers, Hungarian metalworks and furniture makers, were active in Paris beginning in the later years

of the 20th Century’s first decade.

They were known for their fine iron work which was produced, completely by hand, to the highest standards of 18th and 19th Century French work. Their hand-hammered silvered finish gained their work distinction and they rejected die-stamping and file work as heresy. They made consoles, balustrades, iron gates, balcony railings and various models of lighting. Their chandeliers, torcheres, and sconces were constructed in wrought iron and often housed opalescent glass shades or panels. Nics Freres participated in the 1914 Salon of the Societe des Artistes Francais.

In 1925 they were commissioned to create the wrought-iron furnishings for a hairdressing salon by renowned Art Deco designer Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann.
