Dufrene is considered one of the greatest decorative arts designers and decorators of the 20th Century. He began his career during the Art Nouveau period (1895-1910). He was the creator and director of La Maitrise design studio of Galeries Lafayette, the renowned Paris department store. Among many achievements he designed the interior of the La Maitrise pavilion at the 1925 Paris Exposition, and was chairman of the decorative arts deparment of the Expo. Dufrene also was a co-founder of the Societe des Artistes Decorateurs and taught at the Ecole Boulle and also at Ecole des Arts Appliques, both in Paris.
